PRODUCT BULETTIN WATER TREATMENT CHEMICALS PROTECTION OF IDLE BOILERS

Neglect of boilers during standing periods frequently leads to serious corrosion in the steam and water spaces from which further attack may develop during subsequent working periods. Corrosion protection can be obtained in two ways.

1. Keeping all internal surfaces perfectly dry –DRY STORAGE.

2. Excluding air from the boiler by completely filling it with properly treated water- WET STORAGE.

Accordingly, the most common lay-up procedures are wet lay-up and dry lay-up. For any lay –up procedure, It is advisable to drain the boiler, washing down all internals surfaces as the boiler drains. This removes adhering sludge, mud and scale. The heating surfaces should be inspected and chemically cleaned if necessary. For protection of waterside, the choice of methods  usually depends upon the length of time for which the better is to be stored. The following methods can be applied.

1. STORAGE FOR VERY SHORT PERIOD (BANKED) – FOR FEW HOURS :

It is sufficient to keep the boiler on banked fire for short periods with water conditions that existed immediately prior to shut down, provided the oxygen containing feed water is not added after steaming has seased.

2. STORAGE OVERNIGHT OR FOR FEW DAYS :

Make- up water quality should be de-aerated D.M. Water. The space above the water should preferable be kept filled with steam or nitrogen at a pressure greater than atmospheric. Add following additives during storage.

3.   STORAGE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OR FOR 3 – 6 MONTHS:

 The following scheme is to be followed for protection.. Make-up quality should be properly conditioned water

Mixing / Distribution of these chemicals can be done by use of pre-mixed solution addition or by circulating pump or by heating the boiler when partially filled and then topping up with conditioned water. Preferable during this storage period, the boiler should be fired twice per month, bring water temperature residuals are representative.
